2006 EHR WfMS Tutorial Slides 1-2: Workflow Management Systems: Key to EMR EHR Usability

(Take me to the beginning of these slides!)

At Baltimore’s 2006 TEPR Conference I presented a three hour tutorial. Several hundred health IT and non-health IT professionals paid (I think) $375 (not to me mind you) to attend. To health IT folks, workflow management systems were new and interesting. To non-health IT folks, workflow management systems were familiar and taken for granted. An interesting mix!

Workflow Management Systems: Key to EHR Usability

  • Three Hour Tutorial Session
  • Charles Webster, MD, MSIE, MSIE

This was an animation of a cartoon car automatically navigating from a start state to a goal state (in artificial intelligence parlance). Workflow system are frequently compared to GPSs (Global Positioning Systems) guiding, but not constraining, paths toward goals in an adaptive and user-friendly fashion. Folks in health IT and the EHR industry occasionally make a similar comparison, but in the future tense: EHRs “should” act like GPS systems for healthcare.

In contrast to the 2004 tutorial slides, where I simply published the speaker notes, this slide series includes the original slides, but with copious annotation and commentary. I did set out to completely update the slides, but only got as far as the following, eye-candy, title slide.

One of these days! One of these days! But for now, enjoy the 2006 slide set.
