2004 EHR WfMS Tutorial Slide 59-65: More Parallel Value-Added EMR EHR Activities (animation snapshots)

(Take me to the beginning of these slides!)

However, getting rid of non-value-added activities can only go so far in reducing encounter length because once you get rid to the non-value-added activities you still have value-added activities and you can’t get rid of those [without reducing overall value to the patient]. However many value-added activities can be accomplished somewhat in parallel. While it’s true that that the patient can only be in one place at one time and this imposes a certain requirement for the serial accomplishment of those activities there are many preparatory portions of those activities such as printing and assembling material to be delivered to the patient or assembling the trays full of the materials necessary for obtain a specimen or give a shot, all of that can be accomplished before the physician even leaves the room so while that physician is in the room orders can be entered and everybody can be getting that information into their todo lists, seeing it on the status board and they begin to accomplish their stuff so that when that physician walks out of the room trays are waiting and the people are waiting and they immediately go and do what needs to be done. [animation]

[This animation (again, the snapshots of the animation) depicts the effects of parallelizing value-added steps of EMR EHR workflow. The result is shorter encounter length.]
