2004 EHR WfMS Tutorial Slide 52-58: Fewer Non-Value-Added EMR EHR Activities (animation snapshots)

Process definitions, executed by the workflow management system workflow engine, can be used to accomplish exactly this. Instead of having to navigate cumbersome hierarchies of menus or drilling down through complicated dialog boxes or scrolling through long lists of options, the workflow can be controlled by the process definition: here’s the next activity, here’s the next screen. Similarly, instead of going and finding someone, the electronic health record workflow management system can automatically forward todo items into people’s todo boxes as well as to place status information on the generally available status screen so that people can see what needs to be accomplished without having someone to waste their time to go an find them.

Encounter length is determined by a combination of value-added and non-value-added activities. A value-added activity is an activity for which someone will pay for. For example, someone might pay for Corinthian leather in their car [remember that old commercial with Ricardo Montobam?] but they don’t want to pay for “unnecessary” activities such as fixing a defect that shouldn’t be there in the first place. Similarly, using an electronic health record has a combination of value-added activities and non-value-added activities. A value-added activity would be entering some data that can be used in a future decision or making a decision that affects the welfare of the patient. If you can get rid of non-value-added activities such as all the navigation, such as going and having to find the next person in order to pass on an activity to that person, then you can reduct the overall length of the encounter.
